Founded in 1902, the DTV German tourism association serves as an umbrella organisation for local, regional, and national tourism organisations in Germany; the member-oriented organisation is involved in coordination and consultation on tourism policy towards successful development of tourism in Germany.
This is the first alliance of its type and currently represents more than 560 event venues, congress centres, arenas, and special event locations in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, and other neighbouring European countries. Small, traditional town halls seating around a hundred are as much part of the alliance as are multifunctional arenas, venues of modernity for up to fifteen thousand attendees.
Since Mainz tour guides first organized themselves in the 1980s, the association has gone from strength to strength—what began with just under 20 members has now grown into an impressive group of over 90 tour guides. All Mainz tour guides are trained according to BVGD guidelines, and the certifications recommended by the BVGD are also part of the association's program.
